Elona Laurie - violin
Samuel Burstin
- conductor

Elona LaurieIn the first of our April concerts (NB the earlier-than-usual date), we welcome our regular guest conductor, Samuel Burstin, to conduct a programme of all-time favourites. Beginning with Beethoven's fiery and passionate overture to his opera Fidelio, the concert continues with with one of the classic violin concertos. Mendelssohn's violin concerto is so well-known that its radicalism is not often appreciated, but writing a concerto without movement breaks, and including a written-out cadenza rather than relying on the performer's ability to improvise, was highly original in 1845, when the work was first performed. For this performance we welcome Elona Laurie as soloist, a regular performer with the Sinfonia - it will be a performance not to be missed!

In the second half, one of the great Romantic symphonies. Having performed Sibelius's third symphony in our March concert, we now move back in time to his second symphony. Although the soundworld is very obviously that of Sibelius, the symphonic style stills owes a great deal to the examples of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov - the lush orchestration and soaring melodies placing the work firmly in the Romantic tradition.

Tickets £10/£8 - available on the door from 7.00 p.m.
