Julia Hwang St Paul's is delighted to welcome the amazing prodigy Julia Hwang to perform with the orchestra for its Christmas concert. Only 12 years of age, Julia has already recorded her first CD and given virtuoso recitals across the country. She recently won the competition run by the Two Moors Festival in Devon, the youngest competitor ever to do so.

A light, neo-Classical work opens the concert. Malcolm Arnold's Sinfonietta was originally written for the Boyd Neel Orchestra (which also gave the premiere of Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge - see the January 2009 concert). In structure it resembles an 18th-century divertimento, and its memorable melodies remind us of Arnold's great gift for accessibility to his audiences.

Finally, a work that needs no introduction; is there any more famous an opening in classical music? Beethoven's fifth symphony may be one of the most familiar works of all, but its sheer iconoclasm and bound-breaking originality makes it a work that is fresh to both performers and listeners no matter how many times it is played.
