As we draw close to Christmas, we present a programme with a Classical masterpiece; a romantic symphony by a French operatic master; and a chance to meet our Composer in Residence for the first time!

Mozart's 'Paris' symphony, named after the city where it was premiered, was an immediate success on its premiere, and has continued to delight audiences ever since. A review of the first performance commented that 'The Concert Spirituel began with a symphony by M. Mozart. This artist, who from the tenderest age made a name for himself among harpsichord players, may today be ranked among the most able composers.'

Mozart composed the 'Paris' symphony at the age of 22; Bizet's only symphony was produced while he was still a student of Gounod, at the even more tender age of 17. The work was suppressed during Bizet's lifetime (only receiving its premiere in 1935), but has since been acknowledged as one of the great 'youthful' works in the repertoire - in maturity, but also in its high spirits and virtuosic use of the orchestra, it has been compared to Mendelssohn's music to A Midsummer Night's Dream.

In between these two symphonies comes our first work by our Composer in Residence, Matt Rogers - a brand new French horn concerto written for the Sinfonia and the co-principal horn of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Timothy Jackson. Rogers's thoughts on the work show that he intends to exploit the potential of the horn to its utmost: he says ' I will exploit the horn’s ability to be both brashly ritualistic and delicate and subtle'. It promises to be a fascinating new work, and a major addition to the repertory!
