Our Beethoven cycle continues apace this month with Beethoven's earliest symphony, coupled with one of the greatest late symphonies - 'the apotheosis of the dance', as Wagner called it. More interesting, perhaps - certainly more unfamiliar! - is the work that is programmed between them.
Colour Down the Side is a work linked to Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for four woodwind soloists and orchestra, and like the first work by Attwood in this season, Black and White Verticals, was originally written for the City of London Sinfonia. A work of frenetic activity, with a quasi-improvisatory feel to much of it, it tests both the soloists and the accompanying orchestra to the limits!
