Having presented one of Bernard Herrmann's best-known scores in the January concert, we open this very special concert with his Aubade. Composed in 1933 for a chamber ensemble of 14 instruments, it promises a very different viewpoint of a composer known for his lush film orchestrations.
Last season, we were privileged to have the distinguished composer Elena Firsova as our guest at a performance of her Autumn Music to mark her 60th birthday. She was so delighted with our performance that she offered us the world premiere performance of her Cello Concerto No. 4 with the Russian virtuoso Anatole Liebermann. We are looking forward immensely to this great opportunity.
Finally in this concert, we present a symphony that has a fair claim to be one of the greatest classical works ever written. Penned in less than a month, Mozart's final symphony truly deserves its godlike nickname, and its fugal finale displays all of Mozart's sublime genius to the full.
We very much hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be one of the highlights of our season!
