St Paul's Sinfonia Strings
Gorecki - Three Pieces in Olden Style
John Woolrich - Ulysses Awakes
Stravinsky - Apollon Musagete
Tchaikovsky - Serenade for Strings

Victoria Rawlins - viola
Andrew Morley - conductor

After the success of last year's String Concert in January, we showcase the strings of St Paul's Sinfonia once again with a programme built around two Russian classics. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings displays the composer's genius for memorable melodies to the full, and exploits the virtuosity of the players in every way. By contrast, Stravinsky's Apollon Musagete is in many ways a calmer, more reflective piece, a ballet that evokes a Platonic serenity and peace.

Although the other two works in the programme are by living composers, both hark back to older musical forms. Henryk Gorecki's Three Pieces in Olden Style makes a charming opening to the concert, and John Woolrich's Ulysses Awakes is a miniature viola concerto (showcasing the talents of the Sinfonia's Victoria Rawlins), which takes fragments of music by Monteverdi and transforms them into a beautifully lyrical whole.

Tickets £10/£8 - available on the door from 7.00 p.m.
