Our final concert of the season breaks new ground for St Paul's Sinfonia in many ways. It is the first concert that the Sinfonia will perform at a venue other than St Paul's Church - we are delighted to be performing at Catford's historic Broadway Theatre, and to be welcoming the Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock to our audience! It will also be the first concert that St Paul's has undertaken with chorus. We are very pleased indeed to be collaborating with Blackheath Choir and its musical director, Patricia Williams, in this concert. Please also note that the date is not the usual 3rd Friday in the month, but Sunday 28 June.
In the end, though, the whole concert - the whole season, even - culminates with St Paul's first performance of Beethoven's ninth symphony. In this monumental work, we can hear Beethoven struggling against his deafness and against the traditions of the time to produce a truly epic work, a composition that attempts to be more than just music. The heartfelt cry in the last movement 'O Freunde, nicht diese Töne, / sondern lasst uns angenehmere, / anstimmen, und freundenvollere' ('Oh friends, not these tones, / Let us raise our voices in more / pleasing, and more joyful sounds') depicts Beethoven's effort to bring about a world in which Joy reigns supreme, and where 'all men will become brothers'.
It promises to be a sell-out performance, and the high point of St Paul's Sinfonia's concerts so far. Don't miss it!
