Schubert - Symphony No. 3
St Paul's Sinfonia Composition Prize-winner
Sibelius - Symphony No. 3

Andrew Morley - conductor

Third symphonies both youthful and mature begin and end this concert, which returns the Sinfonia to its home at St Paul's Church. Schubert's Symphony No. 3 was written while Schubert was 18 years old, during a year of astonishing creativity. He wrote songs during this year (1814-15) at the rate of roughly one every three days, plus his second and third symphonies, two masses and two string quartets. His third symphony betrays no hint of any compositional strain, being a work that fizzes along with youthful exuberance and high spirits.

After the Schubert comes the first performance of the prize-winner of the 2011 Sinfonia Composition Prize. The winner, Litha Effthymiou, produced a highly original work for her competition entry, which bodes very well for the new work. We hope you are looking forward to hearing our first performance as much as we're looking forward to performing it!

In the second half we present the the beautiful and radical Symphony No. 3 by Jean Sibelius. Having begun his symphonic output with the comparatively orthodox, large-scale and romantic Symphonies 1 & 2, Sibelius began to change his style to a more compact and concentrated style in his third symphony. The soundworld is highly characteristic of Sibelius's mature works, and his use of the orchestra is typical of his compositional genius.

It promises to be another great concert by the Sinfonia - it would be wonderful to see you there!

Tickets £10/£8 - available on the door from 7.00 p.m.
