Beethoven - Symphony No. 2
William Attwood - Black and White Verticals
Beethoven
- Symphony No. 6 'Pastoral'

Andrew Morley - conductor

------------------------------------------------

Our second concert of the season begins two important strands within our 2008-9 season. Our Beethoven cycle marks the fifth season of St Paul's Sinfonia concerts in the most fitting way possible: having played symphonies 1-8 during our first four seasons, it seemed only right to lead up to our performance of the ninth symphony (see the June 2009 concert) with a reprise of the first eight. Our cycle is planned to justapose early, Classical Beethoven with the ground-breaking later works, and begins this evening with performances of his second symphony and the much-loved sixth - the 'Pastoral'.

In between these works comes the first work by our composer in residence for 2008-9. St Paul's Sinfonia has always been strongly committed to the performance of music of our time, and we are very pleased this season to be able to work closely with the composer William Attwood. Attwood is a particularly suitable choice for our first Residency - as well as being one of the most admired and acclaimed young composers of his generation, he is also a local to St Paul's, having been born and brought up in Greenwich, and currently living in Deptford itself. Black and White Verticals was written for the City of London Sinfonia, an orchestra of almost precisely the same size as St Paul's Sinfonia, and so fits perfectly with the works that accompany it on the programme.
