Our November concert embraces all things Classical. Beethoven's music for military wind band is rarely played these days, even by military wind bands, but it seems a fitting way to introduce Haydn's 100th symphony, nicknamed 'Military'.
In the second half, we begin with one of the few trumpet concertos that has entered the mainstream repertoire, performed by Clare Thorn. A member of the trumpet quartet Bella Tromba, Clare performs regularly as principal trumpet with St Paul's Sinfonia, and it will be a treat to have her brilliance brought to the fore.
Having begun the concert in the Classical era proper, we conclude the concert in neo-Classical vein. Prokofiev's effervescent first symphony lasts barely 20 minutes, but manages to pack in more excitement and drama than many pieces lasting twice as long. A virtuoso work-out for the entire orchestra, it will test the Sinfonia's mettle to the limit!
Tickets £10/£8 - available on the door from 7.00 p.m.
