NEW SEASON!

Rossini - Overture 'Semiramide'
Laurence Roman - Concertino for viola
Brahms - Symphony No. 2
Neil Valentine - viola
Andrew Morley - conductor
------------------------------------------------
Our fifth season picks up where the fourth season left off. Having closed in June with Brahms's Symphony No. 1, we open our 2008-9 season with the same composer's second Symphony, a sunny counterpart to the brooding intensity of the first. The concert begins with one of Rossini's finest overtures, to an opera with a labyrinthine plot concerning the tangled (and bloodthirsty) politics in 8th-century Babylon.
After the overture, we present the first of this season's new works. Premiered earlier this year by Neil Valentine, Laurence Roman's Concertino for viola is a work with jazzy elements running throughout, and a virtuosic part for the soloist that culminates in a lightning-quick finale.
