St. Paul’s Sinfonia return to their spiritual home of St Alfege Church in Greenwich to present a programme of orchestral classics and to celebrate the birthday of one of our favourite composers, Malcolm Arnold. Following a long period of performing mostly to cameras and microphones we cannot wait to be back in Greenwich, and our musicians are excited to be with you again. We’re bringing you a stonking programme that kick’s off with Arnold’s jubilant Anniversary Overture written for the twenty-first birthday of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society; repurposed here as a fervent ‘Happy Birthday’ to the man who would have been 100 in October this year. We then welcome St Paul’s cellist Jay Jenkinson, a long time friend and performer with the orchestra, to play Elgar’s celebrated concerto; a work that contrasts introspection, nostalgia and nobility with equal ardour. We draw things to a close with Brahms’ astonishing Symphony No. 4, a work of preeminent design and containing some of the darkest and deepest music of the 19th-century. This event is unmissable and likely to be an emotional and momentous occasion!
St. Paul’s Sinfonia has been celebrating the music of Arnold throughout 2021 and we would like to express our are deep gratitude to the Malcolm Arnold Trust. This concert has been made possible through their support.
