St Paul's Sinfonia Returns

St Paul’s Sinfonia is thrilled and so happy to be performing again!

Our concert in March opens with the stilled hush of the Prelude to Verdi’s opera La Traviata, one of the most romantic and moving operas ever written.  In the opera, the Prelude fades away into the distance… before breaking suddenly into the celebratory opening chorus.  In the concert, we break into a celebration of the music of Malcolm Arnold, who was born 100 years ago.  Arnold’s Sinfonietta No. 3 is characteristically quirky and witty, using his chamber forces to produce wonderful colour and variety.  It’s a great piece, that deserves a much wider audience!

Our March concert ends with one of Mozart’s greatest symphonies – No. 40 in G minor.  It is one of only two minor-key symphonies that Mozart wrote, and the freshness, energy and splendour of Mozart’s symphonic writing shines through in every bar.  We haven’t played this superb masterpiece for a number of years, and we can’t wait to get back to performing it – for you (and everyone)!
